Govt, bus owners to meet Wednesday to readjust fares

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and bus owners will hold a meeting on Wednesday to refix fares as the government announced a reduction in fuel oil prices by Tk5 per litre early on Tuesday.

The meeting, to be held at BRTA headquarters Dhaka, will be chaired by BRTA Chairman Noor Mohammad Majumdar, according to sources at the Road Transport and Highways Division.

The authorities on August 7 increased the fare for long-distance buses by 22% to Tk2.2 per kilometre, fare for buses in Dhaka by 16.27% to Tk2.50 per kilometre and fare for buses outside the capital by 17% to Tk2.4 following an increase in fuel oil prices.

The decision came after a meeting of the BRTA and Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association the previous day.

The government on Monday announced that it had reduced fuel oil prices by Tk5 per litre to alleviate the pressure on consumers caused by the recent price hikes due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

The price reduction applies to all three major petroleum products, namely petrol, octane and diesel.

In line with the new decision, diesel and kerosene will cost Tk109 per litre, petrol Tk125, and octane Tk130. The new prices came into effect on Tuesday.
