The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is allowing the motorcycles to ply the country’s highways if the riders can provide a valid reason to do so.
DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam told this to reporters after inspecting the National Eidgah in Dhaka on Friday.
The DMP commissioner said: “The BRTA’s directive states that motorcycles can run on the highway with the permission of the police in case of emergencies. We are giving passes to those riders.”
“There are a lot of people living in Dhaka whose families are in the village. As a result, we are allowing them to go to their homes on bikes,” he said, adding that the pass system has been introduced to avoid any kind of hassle.
The DMP commissioner further said that they do not want to stop anyone from going to their homes to celebrate Eid with dear ones. However, as the roads have become slippery due to rains and as there are buses and trucks that do not maintain law and order, it is not safe for motorcyclists to travel on those roads and highways, he added.
To avoid any accidents from occurring, restrictions have been placed on motorbikes, he added.
