Covid-19: Bangladesh logs 28 more deaths, 4,838 new cases in a day

Bangladesh reported 28 more deaths with 4,838 fresh cases from coronavirus in 24 hours till Sunday morning. 

Sunday’s tally took the total number of deaths from the virus to 28,819 and cases to 1,909,668 in the country.

The daily positivity rate declined slightly to 14.85% which was 16.50% on Saturday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). 

The country logged 20 deaths from Covid-19 and 5,023 fresh cases on Saturday.

A total of 13,853 people recovered from the virus-borne disease in the past 24 hours taking the total number of recovered persons to 16,78,655.

With the latest count, the recovery rate stands at 87.9% while the fatality rate is at 1.51%.

Of the deaths reported in the 24 hours to 8am, 20 were males and the rest females. 

Dhaka, the epicentre of the virus, logged 3,386 cases and accounted for 12 of the deaths.

Khulna division logged six fatalities and Rajshahi four while Chittagong and Rangpur each reported two, and Barisal and Sylhet divisions counted one each.

With 28 new fatalities, the seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 32.85 on Sunday.

On January 28, Bangladesh logged its earlier highest daily positivity rate at 33.37% reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

The health authorities marked 12 districts, including Dhaka, as red zones owing to their high infection rates between 10% and 29%.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.

Amid growing concerns over the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the government on January 13 announced restrictions on movement of people and public transport vehicles. Schools and colleges went on a hiatus while government and private offices started operating with half manpower to curb the spread of the virus.

A large number of the population has also been vaccinated, with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly 10 months after launching a nationwide campaign.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 5.8 million lives and infected over 411 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 331 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
