Water levels of all major rivers in the northeastern region of Bangladesh are rising, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, as rains continue to lash the country.
According to the met office, heavy to very heavy rainfall may hit the area and adjoining upstream region of the country in the 48 hours from Saturday morning, which could result in some rivers in the region – Surma, Sarigowain, Jadukata, Someshwari – swelling up rapidly and cause short-term flooding in the adjoining low-lying areas.
The water level of Someshwari had increased by 16cm in 24 hours and it was flowing 5cm above the danger mark at Kalmakanda point at 9am.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department in its morning weather bulletin said the monsoon was fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds were likely to occur at most places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna and Sylhet divisions, and at many places in Barisal and Chittagong divisions, with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country, the BMD added.
Rainfall may decrease and the temperature may rise, the met office said.
