After banning motorcycles on highways from July 7 to July 13, authorities have now banned launches from carrying two-wheelers for 10 days, starting from five days before Eid-ul-Azha.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday.
Implementation of the latest ban on motorcycle movement is already underway and will remain in place for five days after Eid.
Jahangir Alam, senior information officer at the Shipping Ministry, confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune on Wednesday.
In another directive on Tuesday, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) said that motorcycle registrations would not be given if the registrant did not have a driving licence.
“From September 15, 2022, the registration authority will have to ensure that customers concerned have driving licences before registration numbers for their motorcycles are issued,” according to the order.
The decision comes at a time when the government is pondering a ban on motorcycles on the highways, considering it risky in the wake of recent road crashes.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the government announced that the movement of motorcycles from one district to another would remain suspended for seven days during Eid-ul-Azha.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges said that movement of motorcycles would not be allowed from one district to another without any logical reason three days before and three days after Eid. The rules apply to ridesharing motorcycles as well. If someone has to travel for an urgent reason, then he or she will have to seek permission from the police.
