‘New wage board for RMG workers on the cards’

A new wage board for the workers of readymade garments sector will be formed, says lawmaker Shahjahan Khan.

His remarks came on Monday, as apparel workers continue protests for the third day, demanding a rise in their salaries.

He added that the workers will soon be provided with ration cards which will enable them to buy some basic commodities at lower prices.

Unrest continues in Dhaka’s Mirpur, as garments workers stage demonstrations saying that their current salaries are not enough to keep up with the rising prices of commodities.

On Sunday, workers reportedly vandalized a factory in the Mirpur area demanding pay raise.

On Saturday, thousands of workers blocked roads to protest against the price hike of daily essentials.

On Thursday, the workers had mounted another protest demanding the same.

In response to that, Khan, a former union leader, held a tripartite meeting involving union leaders, government high-ups and factory owners, for resolution.

Garments workers last saw a raise in salaries in December 2018 when the minimum wage was set at Tk8,000.

In 2010, the minimum was raised to Tk5,300 from Tk3,000.
