Study: 1 in 2 youngsters contemplate suicide

A recent survey, looking at how mental health issues impacted young people, revealed that 50.1% of young people in Bangladesh think of committing suicide at some point of their lives.

Also, 21.3% of the respondents thought of killing themselves during the pandemic. 

According to the survey, 3.7% of the young people tried to kill themselves after the pandemic hit Bangladesh.

The study conducted by Aachol Foundation, a non-profit foundation that works toward suicide prevention, also found that 61.2% of young people are suffering from depression, says a press release issued by the organization. 

A total of 2,026 people participated in the survey from June 1 to June 15 this year.

Women, transgender people, and men aged between 18 to 35 years participated in the online survey. 

According to the survey report, 63.5% of young people said that their stress has increased during the pandemic. 

The respondents reported they are dealing with excessive stress, loneliness, pressure to get married, uncertain future, session jams in universities, financial instability, and cell phone addiction. 

Only 8.5% of the respondents visited a mental health expert for help. And 44.3% of the respondents said that they cannot share their feelings to anyone when they are depressed.  

In an online press conference, Tansen Rose, founder and president of Aanchal Foundation, said that a collaborative approach is needed to end suicidal tendencies in young people.
