Sister Library holds reading on birangona Ferdousi Priyabhashini

The Goethe-Institut Bangladesh in partnership with HerStory Foundation will host a digital circle reading of the autobiography “Nindito Nondon” by sculptor, author and birangona Ferdousi Priyabhashini. The circle will be hosted by the author’s daughter, Fuleshwary Priyanandini. The online event is free and open to an adult audience upon registration. The circle reading celebrates Ferdousi Priyabhashini’s 75th birthday.

Ferdousi Priyabhashini was born in Khulna in the year of the partition. She was 23 years old when the liberation war broke out and was separated from her children and family. She went into hiding in a jute mill. She was captured by the opposition and sexaully assulted for months. This was the experience of scores of other women. After independence, she was given the title ‘birangona’ or female heroine, but continued to face psychological torture. She was rejected and belittled for her experience in the war. Throughout her life, Ferdousi was a vocal advocate for the right to dignity for women like her - speaking openly about her time as a prisoner of war. Ferdousi was a writer and a sculptor. She is a model example of the resilience of spirit and the power of positivity.

About Nindito Nondon

While an autobiography consists of personal memories, Birangana Ferdousi Priyabhashini's autobiography is also a historical document of the birth of the nation called Bangladesh. The horrific past and loss of respect during 1971 was forgotten after tasting sweet independence. Her autobiography brings up the chilling stories of torture in '71 as well as the shining presence of freedom fighters and the war.
