Highly discussed Awami League leader and Basurhat municipality Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza has withdrawn his previously declared strike in Noakhali in deference to the command of his party high-ups.
He made the announcement following a closed door meeting with his elder brother, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, at the party central office in Bangabandhu Avenue on Saturday.
Abdul Quader and his followers recently called for a strike in Noakhali following local MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury’s remarks about his family.
He said: “Our leader, Obaidul Quader, has instructed us to work in unity. He also assured us that our party president is well informed about the politics of Noakhali. She will take a decision regarding the matter.”
“We will wait for a month. If political malpractice and tender manipulation do not stop, we will declare our next course of action then,” he added.

The Awami League leader stirred up debate recently following his statements about the political situation in Noakhali and vote-rigging during elections.
Such remarks have earned Abdul Quader much criticism from his party leaders and activists all around the country.
Responding to a question, Abdul Quader said: “I have said everything as per our party constitution. We have freedom of speech in our party’s declaration.”
Showing a paper of the Awami League’s constitution, he said: “I will speak the truth bravely, of course I will.”
