Bangladesh Railway (BR) has signed a deal with a Chinese company to buy 125 luggage vans worth Tk358.39 crore in order to boost goods transportation between villages and towns.
Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan was present at the contract signing ceremony held at Rail Bhaban on Monday, where he said Bangladesh Railway is going to buy luggage vans after 40 years later.
Of the 125 luggage vans, 75 are for metre gauge track and 50 for broad gauge line.
According to the contract paper, the China National Technical Import and Export Corporation-Railtecho-GNC JV will provide the luggage vans some time between the next 20 to 27 months.
The vans will travel from remote areas of the country to the major cities and farmers can transport their products on the vans, which will allow them to cut transportation costs and they themselves can also take the products to cities and sell them in the market.
The railway minister said: “Farmers can send their agro product to their customers easily using the luggage van.”
