The DNA Laboratory of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police has now been turned into a DNA Bank.
CID’s Additional Superintendent of Police Md Faruk Hossain confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
He said, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially inaugurated the Forensic DNA Laboratory of CID on January 23, 2017.
Bangladesh Police started setting up the lab in August 2011 and finished in June 2015 under the Forensic DNA Laboratory of Bangladesh Police project which was funded by the Government of Japan JDCF, he added.
However, the process of DNA profiling started from January 2014 by the order of the court. The lab received its first sample on January 15, 2014, informed Md Faruk Hossain.
He also said, since it began operations in 2014, the laboratory has profiled 20,000 DNAs from more than 16,000 samples against nearly 6,000 cases including rape, unidentified body identification, paternity dispute or settlement, robbery and murder, which have been stored on LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) servers.
The profiles of criminals stored in the DNA bank can later play an important role in identifying the same person, he added.
Forensic DNA labs analyze all the clues related to criminal and civil cases. Bangladesh Police has been able to solve numerous criminal and civil cases with the help of the DNA Lab of CID, he further added.
