265 Bangladeshis flown back from Maldives

As many as 265 Bangladeshi citizens, stranded in the Maldives due to travel restrictions amidst the coronavirus pandemic, have returned home.

A special Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying them landed at the Dhaka airport at 6:18pm on Saturday, Biman’s Deputy General Manager Tahera Khandaker told Dhaka Tribune.

Till now, 1,860 Bangladeshis, who were undocumented or irregular workers in the Maldives, have returned home, according to airport sources.

In the Indian Ocean archipelago nation, Bangladeshis account for the highest number of Covid-19 cases.

According to the Health Protection Agency of the Maldivian Ministry of Health, of the country’s total Covid-19 cases—1,829 as of Tuesday—1,003 are Bangladeshi migrants, while 590 are Maldivians.
