A special flight with 243 Bangladeshi citizens, stranded in the US amidst the coronavirus pandemic, has returned home on Sunday.
The special flight, arranged by Qatar airways, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 3:15am, carrying the passengers from the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
Airport director Group Captain Touhid-ul Ahsan confirmed the matter.
On May 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs chartered the flight of Qatar Airlines to bring home stranded Bangladeshis residing in the US.
Earlier on March 30, the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC and the two Consulates General in New York and Los Angeles, on an instruction of the Foreign Ministry, circulated a notice through their websites seeking information from Bangladeshis who had been stranded in the US amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
A large number of stranded Bangladeshi citizens responded, providing their information by email to Bangladesh Missions from March 30 to April 30, showing interest to return to Bangladesh by a special charter flight at their own expense.
They also requested the Bangladesh government through Bangladesh Missions to facilitate their return by a special flight.
