A man, accused of killing a child, has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Gazipur.
The incident took place in the Konabari area of Gazipur City Corporation on Sunday night.
RAB 1 Company Commander of Gazipur Porabari camp Abdul Al Mamun confirmed the incident.
The deceased is Jewel Ahmed, alias Shabuj, 22.
Previously, RAB arrested Jewel’s friend, Sagor, from the Pubail area of Gazipur City Corporation on Saturday around 9pm, in connection with the same murder.
Sagor confessed to the crime on Sunday. Based on information provided by him, RAB conducted a raid on their rented apartment in the Konabari area on Sunday afternoon and recovered a decomposed dead body of the murdered child Alif from a plastic sack.
Later in the day RAB encountered Jewel in the nearby area. Sensing their presence, Jewel fired rounds at RAB, injuring two of their members. RAB fired back in retaliation, killing him.
A foreign pistol and some rounds were recovered from the scene.
The body of the deceased was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
Interrogations of Sagor also revealed that Jewel was the main instigator of the crime. He was reportedly an armed terrorist who had hoped to establish himself as a renowned criminal by abducting and killing Alif.
Sagor further disclosed that he, along with three friends including Jewel, had been working at a garments factory located on the 3rd floor of the apartment in which the victim lived.
About a week ago, the landlord, who was the victim’s father, slapped Sagor and Jewel because they had harassed some girls living in the apartment. The friends, angry at the incident, lured Alif to the roof of the building while he was playing and murdered him in retaliation, and hid the body.
Afterwards, they called the landlord and asked him for a ransom of Tk20 lakh, threatening to kill the already dead Alif if their demands were not met. Unable to find his child, Alif’s father called RAB to help rescue Alif.
