The government has suspended all train services, including the inter-district ones, across the country to control the spread of coronavirus.
Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan said this at a press conference at Rail Bhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Earlier, the authorities of Bangladesh Railway suspended all local, commuter, and mail train services across the country from Monday midnight.
Confirming the matter, Railway's Additional Director General for Operations Mia Jahan told Dhaka Tribune that the suspension would remain in force till further notice.
Currently, 257 such trains are functioning across Bangladesh.
Covid-19, a new strain of coronavirus, which was first reported in China's Wuhan, has killed more than 16,500 people across the world and infected over 383,000 till date.
More than 102,000 people have recovered from the virus which has spread to 195 countries.
As of Tuesday, Bangladesh confirmed four coronavirus deaths since the outbreak of the deadly pandemic in the country. The number of total infected now stands at 39.
On Monday, the government declared a 10-day shutdown, effective from March 26 to April 4, to battle the spread of the coronavirus.
Both the private and public sectors, except emergency services, would come to a temporary halt.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry on Tuesday extended the period of shutdown until April 9 for all the educational institutions.
On the other hand, Bangladesh's armed forces started assisting the administration in every divisional and district town from Tuesday, to ensure that people maintain social distance and are taking precautionary measures to prevent the novel coronavirus from spreading further.
