War on drugs: 12 more killed in 9 districts

So far, around 100 people, mostly alleged drug peddlers, have been killed across Bangladesh since law enforcement agencies launched an aggressive countrywide anti-narcotics drive early May.

Brahmanbaria

Jony Mia, 30, an alleged drug trader, was killed in a gunfight in the Akhaura upazila of the district on Tuesday.

Akhaura police OC Mosharraf Hossain Tafardar said: “After hearing gunshots around 3am, Sub-Inspector Kamal Hossain went to the scene with a team and police force and found Jony’s body. He was already dead from gunshot wounds.

“Police also recovered one locally made firearm, one cartridge, two knives and a machete.”

There were eight drugs-related cases against Jony in various police stations, he said.

Cumilla

In Cumilla, two suspected drug traders -- Liton alias Kana Liton, 43, son of Abdus Samad of Poiyapathor area, and Baten, 34, son of Sahid Miah of Bakhornagar village of Muradnagar upazila -- were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Gunjar area around 12:30am.

Police recovered a locally made firearm and 400 bottles of phensidyl from the spot, said Muradnagar police OC AKM Manjur Alam.

“Three policemen were also injured in the incident,” he added.

Kushtia

In Kushtia, two suspected drug traders -- Mukaddes Ali, 42, son of Rezaul Islam of Munshiganj village and Fazlur Rahman alias Title, 48, son of late Yakub Ali -- were killed in a “gunfight” with police in Shehala field area of Daulatpur upazila.

The incident occurred around 3:30am on Tuesday.

Police said they recovered a pistol, five rounds of bullets, a magazine, and 250 bottles of phensidyl from the spot. Three policemen were injured in the reported firefight.

Fazlur was accused in eight drugs-related cases, police said.

Jashore

In Jashore, two unidentified suspected drug peddlers were killed in a “gunfight” between two groups of drug traders in Chanchra Raipara area of the district town around 3am.

Acting on tip-off, a team of police went to the spot and recovered the bullet-riddled bodies, sources said.

Kotwali police OC Azmal Huda said they also recovered two pistols, two rounds of bullets, 600 pieces of yaba and several bullet shells.

Mymensingh

In Mymensingh, suspected drug trader Mizan, 45, son of Nurul Islam of Dakhshin Kachina village in Bhaluka upazila, was killed in a reported gunfight with police around 2am.

Ashiqur Rahman, OC of Detective Branch of district police, said one policeman was also injured in the incident.

Satkhira

In Satkhira, suspected drug trader Anisur Rahman, 40, son of Surat Ali of Pakuria village in Koloroa upazila, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Pilapul field under Deyara union around 2am.

Koloroa police OC Biplab Kumar Nath said: “Anisur was accused in 10 cases and a listed yaba trader. Police also recovered a gun, two rounds of bullets, and 70 yaba tablets from the scene of the firefight.”

Anisur’s body was later sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

Thakurgaon

In Thakurgaon, suspected drug trader Harun, 45, son of late Abdul Aziz, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Shitolpur area of Haripur upazila.

Haripur police OC Ruhul Kuddus said Harun was accused in several cases.

Barguna

In Barguna, a suspected drug trader named Firoz was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Betagi upazila early yesterday, said Betagi police OC Md Mamunur Rashid. 

Police also recovered two firearms, several rounds of bullets, 900 grams of cannabis and 250 yaba pills from the scene.

Dhaka

In the capital, suspected drug dealer Md Sumon Mia was killed in a “gunfight” with police in the Asian City Park area.

Acting on a tip-off, police had conducted a raid in that area in the early hours of the day to stop a huge consignment of yaba pills. Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, sources said.

After the other drug dealers managed to flee, police found Sumon with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where duty doctors declared him dead.

Police said they also recovered a gun, two rounds of bullets, four handmade bombs and 1,000 yaba pills from the scene.

Sumon was accused in five drugs-related cases filed at the city's Dakkhinkhan police station.
