CPA calls on parliament to play effective role against corruption

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has called on the parliament to play an effective role in preventing corruption. Three recommendations were put forth to this end from a seminar organised by CPA Small Branch in Hotel Radisson in Dhaka on Friday. Juan Watterson MP, the speaker of Isle of Man parliament, moderated the seminar titled 'The Role of Parliament in Combatting Corruption.' “The parliament must play an effective role in enhancing the capacity of legal bodies and introducing laws to eradicate corruption on any scale from the state, politics and community,” Watterson said. “Members of the parliament must be united to introduce policies to ensure transparency and end the culture of corruption at all levels of the government,” he added. In response to questions, Watterson said: “MPs and institutions need to be allowed to work independently to prevent corruption. They must earn the public's trust.” He emphasised on forming several kinds of commission, strengthening of the parliamentary standing committees and independence of the judiciary. Jessore 3 MP Kazi Nabil Ahmed was present during the briefing. CPS's 63rd conference began in Dhaka from November 1. The main events will be held from November 5 to 8. Speakers and MPs from 44 countries are taking part in the event.
