President seeks global support for repatriating Rohingya refugees

President M Abdul Hamid has sought continued support of international community, different agencies and states including the UK, to put pressure on Myanmar government to repatriate the Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Rakhine state with proper dignity. “Though Bangladesh is a very small country, on the humanitarian grounds it has given shelter to the Rohingya who were the worst victims of atrocities by the Myanmar security forces,” he said on Thursday when a nine-member delegation of Conservative Friends of Bangladesh (CFoB) called on him at Bangabhaban. Later, the president’s Press Secretary M Joynal Abedin briefed the reporters, where he said President Hamid expressed deep gratitude to the British government for raising strong voice against the oppression on the minority group. The nine-member CFoB delegation led by Anne Main, MP, lauded the pragmatic steps taken by the Bangladesh government on Rohingya issue as they earlier visited the Cox’s Bazar frontier in Bangladesh territory and different refugee camps there. They said the CEoB, which works as a bridge between the governments and people of Bangladesh and the UK, would continue its support for the different development activities between the two countries. Other members of the delegation include: Paul Scully, MP, Will Quince, MP, former MP David Mackintosh and CFoB Chairman Mehfuz Ahmed.
