Bir Shreshtha Ruhul Amin's 45th death anniv today

Ruhul Amin, son of Azharul Ali Miah of Bagchapra village under Begumganj in Noakhali district, joined East Pakistan Navy in 1953. He took part in the Liberation War under sector 9 as a freedom fighter in 1971. Bangladesh Navy Khalishpur headquarters (BNS Titumir) and Rupsha Press Club chalked out elaborate day-long programmes which included recitation from the Holy Quran, placing wreaths at the martyr's graveyard, discussions, milad mahfil, a badminton tournament and prize distribution. On the day in 1971, just six days before the victory, Ruhul Amin, engine room artificer of Bangladesh Naval Ship (BNS) Palash, embraced martyrdom by the hands of Razakar Bahini (collaborators) on the bank of the river Rupsha as he reached the place after swimming nearly a quarter of a kilometre from the ship. Earlier, BNS Palash was captured at Mongla port from the Pakistani occupation forces after a fierce gun battle. The ship BNS Palash was heading for their last destination Khulna with a mission to conquer the industrial city. As the ship reached near the shipyard area, a fighter plane hurled bombs targeting BNS Palash. Bir Bikrom Mohibullah, a staff of the ship, was killed on the spot and the remaining naval staff jumped into the river. Everybody managed to escape except Ruhul Amin, who after managing to escape the Pak bombing was eventually captured by the local collaborators.
