Bangladeshi killed in UK detention centre

A sexagenarian Bangladeshi, who had been living in the UK without proper documents, was killed in an immigration facility in Greater London on Thursday. Tarek Chowdhury, 64, was attacked during an incident at Colnbrook Removal Centre in Harmondsworth, West Drayton on Thursday morning. He succumbed to his injuries around 9:30pm, Telegraph and Express said quoting police. Zana Assad Yusif, 31, care of the centre, was arrested along with two others in connection with the incident. Assad was charged with murder on Friday and sent to jail Saturday through Hendon Magistrates’ Court. The two other men arrested on suspicion were later released. Colnbrook, in Harmondsworth, West Drayton, Hillingdon, detains people subject to immigration control and has the capacity to hold up to 396 men and 27 women. The centre is adjacent to Heathrow Airport, and is run by Mitie Care and Custody, which won the contract to run the centre in 2014 after Serco ran it from its opening in 2004, Telegraph reports. While it designated as a short-term holding facility, in practice some detainees spend years at the site, according to Express. Bangla Tribune reports that Tarek hailed from south Surma in Sylhet. He went to the UK around 12 years back. He was recently taken to the detention centre for deportation. Expressing concern over his client’s death at the detention centre, lawyer Anwar Hossain told Bangla Tribune that they would take legal action after receiving the post-mortem report.
