Feni’s Muhuri, Selonia rivers still above danger level; floodwaters likely to recede

According to local authorities, fourteen villages in Fulgazi upazila of Feni have been submerged

Update : 09 Jul 2025, 07:50 PM

The Muhuri and Selonia rivers in the Feni district are still flowing above danger levels, with the situation expected to improve if the floodwaters gradually recede.

Over the next 24 hours, the water levels of these rivers are likely to remain steady and the flood situation in Feni district may remain stable, according to the latest forecast from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

However, fourteen villages in Feni's Fulgazi upazila went underwater, according to the local administration.

Fulgazi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Fariha Islam said: “Flood control dams have broken in at least seven places in the upazila. As a result, 14 villages have gone underwater.”

More than 150 people took shelter in shelters, dry food and cooked food were arranged for them, she said.

Meanwhile, continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days submerged the Feni-Parshuram road, severing direct road communication with Fulgazi and Parshuram.

Commuters are now forced to use the Chhagalnaiya-Khandalhai road, where limited transport and high fares were causing widespread suffering.

Many were seen risking their lives by travelling in pickup trucks to reach Feni town for urgent needs.

Despite a slight fall in the water level of the Muhuri River, the flood situation in Feni continues to deteriorate, according to local officials.

Abul Kashem, sub-divisional engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Feni, said the river was still flowing 77 centimeters above the danger level on Wednesday.

“Although the water level has slightly decreased compared to Tuesday, several villages in Parshuram and Phulgazi upazilas have been inundated due to breaches in embankments,” he said.
