A stop-and-go traffic jam stretching over at least 22 kilometres has developed along the Dhaka–Tangail Jamuna Bridge highway due to heavy traffic pressure.
The congestion, which began early Thursday morning, has affected the stretch from Asharpur Bypass in Tangail to the Jamuna Bridge.
As a result, homebound Eid travellers have been experiencing severe suffering throughout the day.
Ahsanul Kabir Pavel, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority at the Jamuna Bridge Site Office, said that due to the excessive traffic pressure, only northbound vehicles have been allowed to cross the Jamuna Bridge since morning.
According to the police, a sudden surge in traffic on the highway has caused vehicles to be unable to cross properly at the Sirajganj end of the Jamuna Bridge, which has led to the traffic jam.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of the Elenga Highway Police said that the traffic jam was caused by the excessive number of vehicles.
However, the police say they are working to ease the congestion.
