Gazi tyre factory fire: 7-month pregnant Farzana's desperate search for husband

‘He brought me here for better medical care. Now, who will take care of me?’

Update : 27 Aug 2024, 11:32 PM

Only a month ago, seven-months-pregnant Farzana Akter moved to the Bishwaroad area from Bhola district with her husband, Alauddin.

In just one month's time, Farzana's small world has been turned upside down.

Since Sunday night, Farzana Akter has been waiting in front of the main gate of Gazi Tyres, hoping for news of her husband.

Speaking with her, it was learned that the missing Alauddin, 32, was an auto-rickshaw driver. He used to drive on various routes, including Bishwaroad in Rupganj.

They lived in a rented house in the Bishwaroad area.

Farzana said: "On Sunday night, the owner of the auto-rickshaw that my husband drives informed me that my husband was trapped on the third floor of the Gazi factory due to the fire. At first, I couldn’t believe it. But when I called his number at 11pm, it was switched off. I called again at 2am, and it was still off. It's been two days now with no news. If he's not here, where did he go? I want my husband, whether he’s alive or dead. Please, return my husband to me."

Crying, Farzana added: "Just a month ago, he brought me here from Bhola. Although we've been married for three years, this is our first child. I'm seven months pregnant. He brought me here for better medical care. Now, who will take care of me? For the sake of my child, Allah, please return my husband."

Meanwhile, the relatives of the missing people and the local residents expressed their anger as the fire service workers failed to extinguish the fire in the building even after two days.

The relatives of the missing said: "We don’t want our loved ones back alive anymore, at least return them to us dead. We have nothing more to ask for. They keep telling us to go to Dhaka Medical, Pangu Hospital. After running around all day, we hear the fire is still not out. Then why lie? We won’t leave without our loved ones."

As of the latest, until 10:30pm, people were seen gathering in front of the factory's main gate.

At the filing of this report, the fire was still burning inside the factory building. Fire service personnel were still struggling to extinguish it completely.

An eight-member investigation committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate Hamidur Rahman, has been formed by the district administration to investigate the fire at the Gazi Tyres factory in Rupganj.
