Quota reform protesters will not hold any programs on Wednesday in observance of the Ashura.
Nahid Islam, a coordinator of the Anti-discriminatory Students Movement, announced this on Tuesday night.
He said: “We won’t hold any procession on Wednesday due to Holy Ashura.”
The next program will be announced after discussing it with other coordinators.
Nahid also urged Dhaka University students to remain vigilant in their dormitories and take charge of the halls, defying the Chhatra League.
The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), the gramdson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), will be observed across the country on Wednesday with due religious solemnity.
Earlier, protesting students gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar at 4pm as part of their pre-scheduled program, responding to recent assaults allegedly by Chhatra League members and demanding quota reforms.
They marched towards the VC Chattar of Dhaka University (DU), maintaining their position at the Shaheed Minar area until 8pm.
They concluded Tuesday’s program from there.
On the contrary, Chhatra League leaders and activists took a position at the Raju Sculpture and TSC area starting from 2pm, visibly armed with sticks, iron rods, and helmets.
At least six people were killed in three districts, including the capital, in clashes between Chhatra League and quota reform protesters on Tuesday.
Two were killed in Dhaka, three in Chittagong, and one in Rangpur.
