Update : 07 Jul 2024, 12:34 AM

Mosharraf Hossain, the general secretary of Dhaka University Sociology Department's debating club, was expelled from his role on Friday night for participating in the quota movement by posting on social media.

Protesting his expulsion, 22 debaters from the 2021-2022 session of the organization collectively resigned.

The resigning debaters including Atiq Shahriar, Tanvir Ahmed Rifat, Abdullah Al Fahad, Iffat Mehraj, Uma Rani, Sumaiya Akter, Fatima Tun Nahar Oishi, Sobuj Islam, Rimon Akond, Shahreen Jannat Neera, Rafia Sanzida, and Sabikunnahar Irin.

The new general secretary of the club has been made Saraf Afra Mou.

Professor Abul Kashem Mohammad Jamal Uddin of the Sociology Department has been accused of being behind the expulsion order.

According to the expulsion message, he said: "Mosharraf was dismissed from the post of general secretary of debating society for his involvement in controversial activities. The new general secretary is Saraf Afra Mou.”

The expelled student Musharraf is a 19-20 session student and resident of the Jatir Janak Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.

Regarding the expulsion, Mosharraf Hossain said: "I have been expelled from the organization because I am associated with the quota reform movement. The moderator of this organization, AKM Jamal Uddin sir took this decision unilaterally without any rules.”

"I am not in the least disturbed or frightened by these threats and expulsion orders. I and our comrades will continue the quota reform movement until the demands are met."

Dr Abul Kashem Mohammad Jamal Uddin said: "The department's debating club is a neutral organization, and the general secretary was trying to be involved in the quota movement under the organization's banner. The order was given by the High Court, so it's offensive to go against the law. I have heard of several other problems about him since the last three months, but I overlooked them."
