Severe river erosion has struck a village in Tangail Sadar upazila, where the Jamuna River has consumed the homes of 35 families.
This unexpected erosion has left residents along the riverbank homeless, forcing entire families into a state of distress.
Locals reported that the erosion began suddenly near a dam on Tuesday.
Abdul Kader Jilani, a resident of Charpauli village, shared his plight: "I have lost my ancestral land four times in three decades due to river erosion. On Tuesday afternoon, 60% of our homes were washed away by the Jamuna River. I’m deeply concerned about where I will shelter my children without a house.”
Hunufa Begum from the same village said that all her furniture was swept away by the river due to the erosion.
Sajjad Hossain, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, said a new project has been approved for the construction of a 1,625 metres of embankments in Charpauli of the Sadar upazila, Bhairab Bari and Alipur areas of Kalihati.
Sanowar Hossain, MP of Tangail-5 (Sadar) constituency, said a dam will be constructed in Charpauli area at a cost of Tk250 crore with the financial assistance of the World Bank.
