True equality

Strive towards building a country that is truly free from not just gender inequality

Update : 17 Jul 2022, 10:19 PM

Gender inequality has been a persistent and wide-spread issue not only globally, but even more so in the sub-continent. However, it is extremely promising that Bangladesh has surpassed its neighbors in establishing better gender parity for almost a decade.

According to the latest report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Bangladesh has ranked first in South Asia in gender equality for the 8th consecutive year. Despite the many obstacles we have to face as a nation, it is truly encouraging to see Bangladesh forge ahead in building a strong foundation for equality.

Gender parity, on top of being the more inclusive and fair move, allows for more of the country's resources to be utilized effectively, which can only benefit us in the long run. It is no secret that Bangladesh offers ample employment opportunities for its female population; a good example of this is that over 80% of the workforce in the RMG sector consists of female employees.

However, we must not let ourselves believe that the fight for equality ends here. There remain pressing issues such as domestic violence, discrimination in the workplace, and an overall unhealthy standard of living that especially the female population continues to battle with on a daily basis.

Topping the list of gender parity in the sub-continent must not be the height of our achievements in this regard. We must continue to work through the multilayered concerns stemming from gender inequality, and bridge the gap once and for all.

It is certainly reassuring that we, as a nation, are doing our part to sustain a fair distribution of opportunities and resources amongst our people. Let's not stop here. We must strive towards building a country that is truly free from not just gender inequality, but inequality in every capacity.
