No more empty promises about climate support

Year after year, the cycle of adverse impacts as a result of climate change only gets worse in Bangladesh

We agree wholeheartedly with Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus who said a radical change is needed in the global framework to address climate impacts.

Indeed, for years now, developing nations such as Bangladesh have been suffering as a result of the actions of the developed world in bringing about the climate crisis.

While climate change is always pushed as a global problem, what must never be forgotten is that it is the developed world which is solely responsible for the sufferings of hundreds of millions of people who must deal with the disproportionate reality of climate change.

Year after year, the cycle of adverse impacts as a result of climate change only gets worse in Bangladesh, and for a nation already struggling and facing so many challenges, that it always needs to be wary of natural calamities has always been nothing short of an injustice.

While Bangladesh and many similar nations have done an admirable job of fortifying their nations against climate change, this was never something they could do without support -- support that they are well within their rights to receive.

By now it feels almost futile to expect the developed world to put their money where their mouths have been, and support developing nations in their fight against climate change. However, this is the pressure that developing nations, and with Bangladesh led by Dr Yunus playing an active role, must apply on the developed world.

There is no time for empty promises, and if leaders of the developed world truly care about what happens to nations such as Bangladesh, it is time for them to prove it with their money and not their mouths.
