Popular Sushi types

Sushi is characterized by its unique combination of vinegared rice, seafood, vegetables and occasionally tropical fruits, all wrapped in a delicate sheet of seaweed called nori.

This dried seaweed sheet is essential for wrapping certain types of sushi like maki and temaki.

It is often served with soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger, which enhance its flavors.

Sushi comes in various forms, each offering a distinct flavor and texture.

The variety of sushi types—such as nigiri (fish over rice), maki (rolled sushi), and sashimi (sliced raw fish)—has remained a staple of Japanese cuisine.

Maki Sushi

Maki sushi consists of sushi rice, raw or sauteed fish and vegetables wrapped in nori and then sliced into bite-sized rolls.

There are various types, like hosomaki (thin rolls) and uramaki (inside-out rolls).

An example of maki sushi could be a salmon avocado roll or a shrimp tempura roll, where fresh salmon or crispy shrimp is combined with avocado, cucumber, rice and nori.

Nigiri

Nigiri is made with a small mound of sushi rice topped with a slice of raw fish or seafood.

It's typically served with a small dab of wasabi between the rice and the fish.

A common and popular option is salmon nigiri or shrimp nigiri, where a slice of fresh salmon and a cooked shrimp is placed on the rice, often garnished with a hint of wasabi.

Baked Sushi

Baked sushi features sushi rolls that are topped with seafood or vegetables and then baked until crispy and warm.

The result is a creamy and flavorful contrast to traditional sushi.

Baked salmon roll is quite popular dish as salmon, cream cheese and other ingredients are rolled up and baked for a crispy texture, creating a warm and savory bite.

Or baked shrimp roll can also be a good option.

Sashimi

Sashimi though not technically sushi, is a popular Japanese dish consisting of thinly sliced raw fish or seafood, served without rice.

It highlights the pure, fresh taste of the fish, often accompanied by soy sauce, wasabi or pickled ginger.

Sashimi is commonly enjoyed alongside sushi for those who prefer the unadulterated flavor of raw fish, such as tuna, salmon.
