The United States, China and the Maldives have congratulated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing the victory as a reflection of the international community's confidence in Bangladesh.
In a message issued on Wednesday, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen congratulated Dr Khalilur on his election to the prestigious post.
"Congratulations, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on your election as President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly," the envoy said.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly will open on September 8, with world leaders gathering at the UN Headquarters in New York later that month for the annual high-level debate.
China also extended its congratulations, saying the election reflected the confidence of the international community in Bangladesh and its constructive role in advancing multilateralism and international cooperation.
In a statement issued by the Chinese embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday, Beijing expressed hope that Dr Khalilur would unite member states, uphold the principle of sovereign equality, defend international law, promote dialogue and consultation, and strengthen multilateralism.
China also reaffirmed its readiness to support him in carrying out his responsibilities as president of the 81st session of the General Assembly.
Meanwhile, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu described the election as a proud moment for Bangladesh and the wider region.
"I wish you every success in this important role," Muizzu said in a congratulatory message following the election.
Expressing confidence in Dr Khalilur's leadership, the Maldivian president said the General Assembly would continue to serve as a vital platform for all member states under his stewardship.
"I am confident that under your able leadership, the General Assembly will continue to serve as a vital platform for all member states," he said.
Calling the outcome a significant achievement, Muizzu added: "This is indeed a proud moment for the people of Bangladesh and the wider region."
Dr Khalilur Rahman was elected president of the 81st session of the 193-member UN General Assembly at a vote held at UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
In the secret-ballot election, he secured 99 votes, defeating Cyprus's candidate by a margin of eight votes. Of the 190 ballots cast, Bangladesh received 99 votes while Cyprus secured 91, with no invalid votes or abstentions.
The election is being viewed as a major diplomatic success for Bangladesh, underscoring the country's growing role and engagement in multilateral affairs.
Dr Khalilur is set to assume the presidency of the world's most representative multilateral body at the opening of the 81st session in September.
