The word is defined as the deterioration of mental or intellectual state due to trivial material

Update : 02 Dec 2024, 03:55 PM

Oxford Languages has named ‘brain rot’ as the 2024 Word of the Year, reflecting growing concerns about the impact of consuming excessive low-quality online content.

Defined as the deterioration of mental or intellectual state due to trivial material, the term saw a 230% surge in usage this year, driven by viral trends on platforms like TikTok and broader societal conversations about mental health.

First recorded by Henry David Thoreau in Walden (1854) as a critique of intellectual decline, ‘brain rot’ has found renewed relevance in the digital age, often used humorously by Gen Z and Gen Alpha while also sparking serious discussions about the effects of social media.

Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl praised the selection, calling it a reflection of humanity’s evolving relationship with technology and content consumption.

The choice follows public voting involving over 37,000 participants, cementing ‘brain rot’ as a cultural and linguistic marker of 2024.
