A large blaze was reported at a new block of flats in East London and according to the city's fire brigade the building was unoccupied when it caught fire. London Fire Brigade confirmed that 80 firefighters were dispatched to a block of flats under construction in Mace Street, Bethnal Green, Independent reported.
A spokesperson for the LFB said 75% of the roof was alight.
Huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the building in videos posted by Twitter users. Footage showed the building billowing smoke into the air, while images showed the entire roof of the building on fire. One witness, Nolan MacGregor, told Metro news outlet that the block of flats overlooks Regents Canal and was near Mile End Park.Another fire in Bethnal Green. ‘The canal walkway had been blocked off by firemen,’ he said. ‘There was one fire engine that I could see on the bridge, south of the building. There were two firemen on the actual canal pathway itself.
‘People seemed to be really shocked, I heard a few people shouting “Oh my God” and all.
It comes after another block of flats in Bethnal Green caught fire at the end of June, and as the capital is still coming to terms with the devastating blaze at Grenfell Tower that killed at least 80 people.
