UK police identify two London attackers

One of the three London Bridge attackers was earlier investigated by British security services but had not been viewed as a serious threat, British police said on Monday. Khuram Shazad Butt, 27, was a British citizen born in Pakistan, who was known to police and MI5. “There was no intelligence to suggest that an attack was being planned and the investigation had been prioritised as such,” police said. The second attacker Rachid Redouane, 30, who police said claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan, and also known as Rachid Elkhdar with a different date of birth. Both lived close by in east London. Police said they were working to identity the third attacker. On Saturday the attackers drove over pedestrians on London Bridge, before stabbing bystanders in the nearby Borough Market area.IS claims responsibilityIS claimed responsibility for Saturday night’s attack, the terrorist group’s agency Amaq said on Sunday. “A detachment of IS fighters executed on Monday’s London attack,” a statement posted on Amaq’s media page, monitored in Cairo, said. It was the third militant attack in Britain in less than three months.
