Bangladesh Youth Games to host 193 events

The final phase of the Sheikh Kamal 2nd Bangladesh Youth Games is set to get underway in the capital Saturday featuring a total 193 events from 24 disciplines.

More than 4,000 athletes from eight divisional teams will compete for 193 gold, 193 silver and 287 bronze medals.

The opening ceremony will be held at Bangladesh Army Stadium where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the seven-day meet.

The first phase of the games was held at district level, with participation by upazilas, and divisional phase, with participation by districts, was held after it.

The Bangladesh Olympic Association decided to name the youth games after Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for his contribution in sports.

Ahead of the final phase, the games' flame was lit by BOA president, Chief of Army Staff, General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, also the co-chairman of the youth games.

The youth games flame will make its way from Tungipara, Gopalganj - where the final phase inauguration took place – through Jazira-Mawa to BOA headquarters, Abahani field before reaching Dhaka's Army Stadium for the opening ceremony.

The first edition of the games took place in 2018, with 50,000 athletes, coaches, team and technical officials in attendance.

This time, the figure has surpassed 60,000.

In the last edition, the number of disciplines was 21, but this time it has been increased to 24.

"We are reaping the benefits of the first edition, as many athletes who shone in the first edition have now cemented their place on the national stage,” BOA secretary general Syed Shahed Reza said in a press conference.

The Bangladesh Association of Banks, Saif Powertec and Walton are the sponsors of the meet that will finish on March 4.
