Ehsanul or Manjurul to be named national selector

Former Bangladesh cricketers Ehsanul Haque and Manjurul Islam are in the running for a post in the national selection panel. The BCB in its 17th executive board meeting held earlier this week extended the contracts of the current national selection panel, led by Minhajul Abedin, and also decided to bring a change in one of the three members. Besides Minhajul, the national selection panel also has Habibul Bashar and Sajjad Ahmed as members. The three-member junior national selection panel, meanwhile, comprises former cricketers Ehsanul, Hannan Sarkar and Hasibul Hossain Shanto.

The inclusion of former Bangladesh left-arm pacer Manjurul will mean a new inclusion in the BCB selection task. It is understood that current national selection panel member Sajjad will be moved to the junior level national selection panel. According to sources, the former cricketer himself has requested to the board for his move to the junior level national selection job citing the zone to be his forte. Ehsanul coming in as the replacement of Sajjad is justified, given the board’s motive to “enhance the experience of the current selectors”. But Manjurul’s name has raised a few eyebrows within the board as it has pretty much “come out of blue” and more element of surprise was added when the name was referred as the replacement of Bashar.

It is learnt that the board during the meeting had a good length of discussion regarding the subject and eventually came out with the decision of bringing in either Ehsanul or Manjurul in place of Sajjad. Manjurul following his retirement from cricket picked up the role of coaching. The left-arm pacer, who has played 17 Tests and 34 ODIs for Bangladesh, worked under the now disposed Asian Cricket Council and was appointed the second coach to China women’s team. According to the BCB cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan, the board is yet to decide the third member of the national selection panel. With the Bangladesh Test squad for the home series against Australia set to be announced soon, it is understood that a name will be announced to complete the national selection panel.
