BPL achieves record revenue in ticket sales

The recently concluded 11th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 has achieved record revenue in terms of ticket sales.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Faruk Ahmed in a video message to the media claimed that the ticket sales for the season rounded up to a scorching Taka 12 crores 25 lakhs.

According to the BCB boss, a portion of the revenue from the tickets will be shared among the seven participating teams.

“The participating teams had big demand on revenue sharing. I didn’t know the figures of the actual revenue during that point of time [in the meeting with the BPL franchises]. Though we have not been able to set a proper revenue sharing model for the season, we will share a good portion of the revenue from the ticket sales with the franchises,” said Faruk in the video message.

“We have sold tickets worth Taka 12 crores 25 lakhs this season, while in the last 10 seasons the figure combined was just Taka 15 crores. So, we have achieved almost the same ticket sales in one season as we did in the last 10 seasons overall. Apart from the ticket sales, we have also sold ticketing rights for three years for Taka 1 crore for every year,” he added.

Faruk explained that the success in revenue from ticket sales was down to digitalization.

“I had a lot of commitments when I took charge of the BCB in August. I thought it is possible to make good revenue from ticket sales, particularly from BPL and this season has been a massive success,” said the BCB supremo.

“Big reason has been digitalization of ticket sales. The process was 100% fair and secured, like it is during the International Cricket Council events. In first round, we sold about 35% tickets online and in the second round of the tournament it was 40%,” he added.

The BCB chief in the video informed that the board has already started working for the next season, and preparing a foolproof plan to avoid irregularities that had emerged in the 11th edition of the tournament.

“There are limitations in BPL. There were issues with tickets initially and there were a couple of teams which had created issue in terms of payments. There has been heavy criticism due to those issues. But we are trying to come back better next season,” said Faruk.

“We [BCB] have already started working for the next season and we already found a window for the tournament which hopefully will not clash with other franchise leagues. That way the teams would be able to get quality overseas players.”
