The search committee formed by Ministry of Youth and Sports is set to recommend ad-hoc committees for 52 sports governing bodies in the country, committee’s convener Zobaidur Rahman Rana told Dhaka Tribune.
A total of 55 board/federations/confederation/associations are currently enlisted by the National Sports Council.
Only Bangladesh Cricket Board, Bangladesh Football Federation and Bangladesh Olympic Association are exempt from ad-hoc formations.
The presidents of BCB, BFF and BOA are elected by polls unlike the rest who either hold election for the seats of general secretary, vice presidents and other executive members or are run by NSC-led ad-hoc committees.
“We sat in a meeting with representatives of 52 federations. We already recommended ad-hoc committees for nine federations to the ministry so that they can run activities. We are expecting feedback soon,” said Rana.
The Ministry removed the presidents of 42 sports governing bodies on September 10 following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.
The five-member search committee began view-exchange meetings with the federation representatives on October 17, which ended on October 30.
The committee will meet the district and divisional sports associations next.
“Except cricket, football and BOA, there will be ad-hoc committees for the remaining 52. Football’s election was just held. Cricket and Olympics polls will take place accordingly,” Rana replied to a query.
When asked about the findings of the meetings with the federations, Rana said: “Every federation has its gaps. Many don’t have knowledge of constitutions. It was a problem. They must know.
“Our main job is to update the constitution of every federation.”
The convener further added that the search committee made it mandatory for each federation to have a website of their own.
An official of one of the federations who requested anonymity told Dhaka Tribune that they want to see sports enthusiasts in the ad-hoc committee who will be dedicated and professional.
