Asif: Good news on BCB soon

Adviser of Ministry for Youth and Sports Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan has hinted that there will be good news soon involving the Bangladesh Cricket Board as the young adviser spoke to the media Sunday at his office.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan along with many other influential directors of the board are out of reach at the moment since the fall of Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.

The cricketing arena of the country has been passing through a curious time since then.

Reports said Nazmul has decided to step down from the president position which he has been holding since 2013.

Adviser Asif said he is yet to learn about the matter officially but has assured that the situation in the BCB will be solved soon.

As per the wide discussion in the cricket fraternity, former Bangladesh cricketer and chief of the national selection panel Faruk Ahmed has a strong chance to become the next president if an interim board is formed.

A lot though needs to be followed according to the BCB constitution which has been twisted over the years to serve Nazmul and his quorum.

For a new board to take over, at least 16 directors including the president have to resign.

However, there is nothing indicated in the BCB constitution on a situation where the president is missing or absent.

The government’s direct involvement in BCB matters will only disrupt the situation more and can even make International Cricket Council step in.

Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe cricket were suspended by the ICC not so long ago due to government interventions.

“I have learnt about the resignation of the BCB president and directors through the media. I have not received anything officially yet. We are trying to reach a solution to this situation through discussions with different stakeholders,” said Asif.

Since the fall of the Awami Leage-led government, strong demands from former cricketers, coaches and sports organizers have risen to reform the BCB constitution.

There is also a demand that the constitution should ensure that a person does not remain in power of the board for a long time.

“We are looking into the matter [of BCB constitution] and do not want to comment on it before reaching a solution. I hope you all will soon hear good news,” said the young adviser of the ministry for youth and sports.

“We said we would work on reforming the system and not target any individual. It is for sure that those who are responsible for ruining the system will be taken care of. But regarding BCB, there is a constitution. Those who will get the responsibility should work on reforming the constitution and it should be democratic. At the same time, they should also work on finding out and revealing the irregularities and corruptions that took place. The plan is the same with other sports federations as well,” Asif explained.

Asif informed not only cricket but he is looking to remove politics from all other sports associations.

“We have an agenda to keep sports out of political influence. We will create a search team for this. The team will look at the current state of all the other federations,” Asif concluded.
