South Africa women’s team squared the three-match series 1-1 after beating Bangladesh by eight wickets in Wednesday’s second one-day international in Potchefstroom.
Asked to bat first at Senwes Park, the Tigresses posted 222 runs losing four wickets, riding on Fargana Hoque Pinky’s second ODI ton.
The women in red and green’s only ODI centurion, Fargana struck a 167-ball 102, studded with 11 fours while Fahima Khatun chipped in with an unbeaten 46 off 48 deliveries to give the visitors hope of clinching a historic series win.
Fargana and Fahima added 93 for the fourth wicket to help the tourists get past the 200-mark after the openers put on 48.
Player of the match in the series opener, Murshida Khatun was dismissed for eight after opening batter Shamima Sultana departed for 28, while captain Nigar Sultana made 13.
Marizanne Kapp led the way for the hosts with 2/21 from nine overs.
In reply, the home side got off to the perfect start as skipper Laura Wolvaardt (54) and Tazmin Brits (50) put on 106 for the opening wicket.
Despite the openers’ dismissal in quick succession, the Proteas women romped to their target in 45.1 overs thanks to an unbroken 117-run stand for the third wicket.
Anneke Bosch, adjudged player of the match, remained not out on 65 while Sune Luus was unbeaten on 47.
Fahima and Ritu Moni bagged one wicket each for Bangladesh.
The third and final ODI will be held in Benoni Saturday.
The Tigresses will be looking to add South Africa to the list of teams they have bested in an ODI series after Ireland and Zimbabwe.
The two teams earlier shared the three-Twenty20 international series 1-1 with the other game washed out.
