The soothing end to a dismal drama

After numerous requests from friends, family and cricket representatives including the Bangladesh Cricket Board went in vain, the intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina finally swayed Tamim Iqbal to withdraw his untimely decision of retirement.

The past three days had been hectic for Tamim and the board following a statement by the One Day International captain that he wants to play the first of three-match ODI series against Afghanistan despite not being fully fit.

The BCB president Nazmul Hasan criticized the words heavily to media which Tamim did not take lightly and announced his shocking retirement the following day through a tearful press conference at his hometown in Chittagong.

It was learned that the legendary Bangladesh opener was not happy with the workplace and the environment in the dressing room in the last one year and utilized the “right time” to call it a day.

“I did not take this decision suddenly. I've been thinking about this for a while. There are different reasons, I don't think I have to mention those,” Tamim said during the retirement announcement.

Tamim however, did not hide those reasons to the Premier when they met at Ganabhaban Friday, informed a source close to the cricketer.

Tamim explained the whole situation that led to another emotional moment with his wife and cricket superstar Mashrafe bin Mortaza around.

The PM told Tamim that Bangladesh need him at the ODI World Cup which is only three months away and the stylish batter could not say no this time.

Tamim's distress was already melting after declaring retirement as he received support from many sides for sticking to his final call.

Many close to him tried to convince to alter the decision but after failing to do so they started backing the choice.

He went straight to his home in the port city after the farewell presser and spent time with family and friends before flying to Dhaka Friday morning.

At the Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong, some fans ran towards Tamim to show their support and say they are also sad about his retirement.

Soon after returning to his flat in Dhaka, Tamim was called by Mashrafe and informed that the Prime Minister wanted to meet and the gloomy state eventually ended by the afternoon.

But can the Bangladesh captain get the comfort zone back in the national team afterwards when he returns following the one and a half month break?

Although it was a sudden call of retirement in between an international series, not all the elements behind taking the decision totaled up in a single day.

A lot of uncomfortable situations had developed in and outside the dressing room for Tamim over the last one year.

It was also told that the captain as well as the key batsmen of the team were not enjoying the game due to those hassles off the pitch.

The most notable among them was the rift between him and the BCB chief.

Perhaps, in order to look after the condition, the PM wanted to meet the BCB supremo at her office soon after talking to Tamim, the output of which can be seen in the upcoming days.
