Talking point: An extra spinner or extra batter?

The toss at Sydney Cricket Ground before the Bangladesh-South Africa game in the Super 12 stage could be a tricky one.

The SCG is usually a good batting track and in the first game here, New Zealand scored 200 runs against defending champions Australia, who were later bundled out for just 111.

The average first innings total in Twenty20 Internationals here is 163 from 13 games and the average second innings total is 138.

Among all the venues across Australia, SCG is supposed to be much more familiar to Bangladesh as usually spinners play a good role here.

Bangladesh played with four specialist bowlers in the first game against the Netherlands.

Soumya Sarkar (three overs) and Mosaddek Hossain (one) jointly played the fifth bowler role in that match where they clinched a nine-run win.

But against South Africa at the SCG, the Tigers could go with an extra spinner.

In that case, off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz is in contention to break into the playing XI and it looks like either Yasir Ali Rabbi or Hasan Mahmud will have to make way.

But the final call will be decided after assessing the condition on matchday.
