All-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin became the first Bangladeshi to be replaced by a concussion sub in ODIs after he was hit on his helmet while batting in the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Tuesday.
The left-handed batsman showed signs of concussion and for his safety, made way for right-arm paceman Taskin Ahmed, who came in as a like-for-like replacement.
Saifuddin was struck in the helmet from a bouncer of right-arm pacer Dushmantha Chameera in the second ball of the 47th over.
He was batting on 11 when the ball hit his helmet and went up high towards the point region.
Non-striker batsman Mushfiqur Rahim called for a run and Saifuddin went for the single.
Saifuddin made a 30-ball 11 before being run out off the very delivery that struck his helmet AFP
He was well short of the crease despite his unsuccessful dive to cover the ground.
The throw from the point fielder Kusal Mendis directly struck the stumps and TV replay showed Saifuddin was run-out.
Just after the dive, Saifuddin looked in discomfort and later went back to the pavilion.
He was then taken to hospital for a scan as per the concussion protocol set by the International Cricket Council.
Previously, two Bangladeshi players in the form of Liton Das and Nayeem Hasan were replaced as concussion subs, by Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam respectively, in the pink-ball Test match against India back in November 2019.
