Majestic Mominul reaches new high in own kingdom

Mominul Haque, the Test captain of Bangladesh, was born in Cox’s Bazar, a district close to Chittagong, but he may claim himself as the King of Zahur Ahmed Chowhury Stadium of Chiitagong.

The diminutive man became the first man in Bangladesh’s history to score 10 Test centuries as he hit his seventh Test ton at his most favorite ground.

No other Bangladeshi has scored more than three centuries at the same ground.

Ironically, Mominul is the second in the list of Bangladeshi centurions at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka with his three tons.

With the 115-run innings Saturday, the fourth and penultimate day of the first Test against the West Indies, Mominul has now surpassed Tamim Iqbal, who has scored nine centuries so far for the Tigers.

Mushfiqur Rahim is in third position with seven hundreds.

However, Tamim and Mushfiq have played 117 and 132 innings respectively, while Mominul has played only 76 thus far.

The 29-year old Mominul also reached the 3000-run mark in Tests as the fifth Bangladeshi.

He reached the landmark in his 76th innings, the same number of innings Tamim needed to reach the milestone.

Mushfiq, Shakib al Hasan and Habibul Bashar are the other three who have surpassed the mark.

With seven tons at ZACS, Mominul is joint fourth in the list of most number of three-figure innings at a single venue.

Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka scored 11 centuries at Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo to top the list.

Jacques Kallis of South Africa and Sir Don Bradman of Australia scored nine centuries each at Newlands in Cape Town and Melbourne Cricket Ground respectively.

Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka struck eight centuries at the SSC.

Mominul shares fourth spot with Jayawardene, Sangakkara and Australia’s Michael Clarke.

The Lankan duo scored seven hundreds each in Galle while the Australian made the same number of tons at the Adelaide Oval.

Mominul has crossed the 50-run mark at ZACS eight times, including the recent innings.

He has failed only once to convert the half century to a century when he got out for 52 against Afghanistan in September 2019.
