Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan believes it is not possible to resume the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League this season.
Only one round of matches were played in the DPL before all sorts of cricketing activities were suspended in the country since mid-March due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.
There was a discussion going on in the cricketing fraternity as to whether it is possible to start the league in the coming months.
But the reality is that the Covid-19 situation has not improved significantly over the past few months.
“It is really tough to say at the moment whether it is possible to start the DPL in this situation. Maybe it was possible if we could start it a bit earlier. But now it’s very tough to happen. If you ask for my personal opinion then I believe it is not possible to resume DPL now,” said the BCB president to a private TV channel Tuesday.
“One of the problems is, if we send our players for an away series in the upcoming months, many DPL clubs may lose interest to continue or resume DPL. So, in that case we may discuss with the club what they want. Secondly, we have to see whether every player is ready to play at the moment,” he concluded.
The Directorate of Health Services has confirmed that 33 more people died of coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, taking the number of deaths to 3,471 in the country.
Besides, 2,996 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 over the same period, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 263,503.
As many as 26 cricketers from the national pool have started individual practice sessions a few days ago under special arrangement of BCB at five venues across the country.
Besides that, national women cricketers have also started training.
But practice in group is not recommended or encouraged due to the coronavirus situation.
Bangladesh were scheduled to tour Sri Lanka last month for a three-match Test series, part of the World Test Championship, but it was later postponed to a later date owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
BCB and Sri Lanka Cricket are negotiating about arranging the series in the coming months.
There is also a chance of playing three T20Is between the two nations if the tour takes place.
BCB is also planning to send its High Performance team to Sri Lanka for a series in upcoming months.
It was learnt that the national team may travel to the island nation at the end of September if the situation permits and everything goes according to plan.
