Sixers edge over Frylinck valiance

Sylhet Sixers managed a nervy 5-run win over Chittagong Vikings during their BPL match at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla national stadium.

Chittagong needed 24 runs in last over while chasing 170. Sunzamul Islam took a single in the first ball and gave the strike to big-hitter Robbie Frylinck who struck a six to keep the Vikings’ hopes alive. The South African scored two in the next ball before hitting another towering six in the fourth ball to reduce the target to nine off last two balls.

Bowler Al-Amin Hossain bowled a yorker in the penultimate ball when Frylinck could score only a couple and  the right handed Frylinck, who remained not out on 44 off 24 balls, only managed a single in the final ball that saw Sylhet claim victory.

Taskin Ahmed, who returned with figures of 4-28, gave his side the breakthrough in the first over. Mohammad Shahzad hit a six on the second ball of the over and but as he tried to emulate the same two balls later, the mishit was taken by Sylhet skipper David Warner.

The other opener Cameron Delport formed a good partnership (57) with Mohammad Ashraful for the second wicket. But a sharp effort from Sandeep Lamichhane at the point ended Delport’s impressive innings in the form of a run-out. The left hander scored 38 off 22 balls with four fours and three sixes.

Ashraful departed after scoring 22 off 23 balls in the ninth over and Vikings lost the momentum after losing their captain Mushfiqur Rahim (5) in the next over.

But Frylinck gave a valiant effort though it was not enough in the end.

Earlier in the day, Sylhet got off to a bad start as they lost three wickets for just six runs in 2.3 overs after winning the toss. But young left-hander Afif Hossian formed a brilliant 71-run partnership with captain Warner to lift Sylhet from the gloom. Afif scored 45 off just 28 balls with the aid of five fours and three sixes.

Warner continued the recovery and added 70 runs with Nicolas Pooran before getting out for 59 off 47 balls.

After those two good partnerships, West Indian Pooran gave the finishing touch of the innings and remained not out with 52 off 32 balls. The southpaw was adjudged man-of-the-match for his vital contribution.

Frylink was pick of the bowlers for Chittagong with a figure of 3-26 in four overs.
