Comilla Victorians’ head coach Mohammad Salahuddin expressed his disappointment at there not being any edge detection device - snicko or hot spot - to help with the DRS for the BPL. There was a decision where Steven Smith was initially given not out by the on field umpire but that was later overturned by the third umpire without conclusive evidence.
It was the first ball of the ninth over and Sylhet Sixers’ Al-Amin Hossain was bowling. Smith tried to cut the delivery but it went to the keeper Liton Das as Al-Amin and Liton appealed vehemently, to no avail. They immediately went for the review and replays did not show any conclusive deviation as the ball passed the bat. Without the help of snicko or hotspot to detect the edge, it would have been impossible to get conclusive evidence to overturn the decision, but the third umpire did just that.
“We knew about the lack of snicko and hotspot before the tournament began. But we are aware that these technologies are expensive and perhaps the required expenses were not provided. Since we were told before the tournament by the organisers about this, I don’t have much to say,” expressed Salahuddin at the post match press conference.
Salahuddin explained that even though there was ball tracking technology in hawk-eye, it would not be of much help with caught behinds and sometimes even lbw’s if there wasn’t conclusive evidence: “We were informed before that there would just be hawk-eye and no snicko or hot spot. I feel that without snicko or hot spot it would not help the third umpire much with caught behinds and edges. They can get help with lbw’s but even then, there could be situations where there is not conclusive evidence.”
The head coach was hopeful though that it was time the BPL managed such technologies with Bangladesh becoming a middle-income country: “It’s time for us to raise our standards and have all the standard technology as BPL is getting bigger and better and our country is also a middle-income country.”
