Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has said the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots will revisit its central characters years later and carry a "big message."
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Hirani said the script is still being developed and requires further work before it is finalized.
He said the sequel will follow Rancho, Farhan, and Raju 15 to 20 years after the original film. The three characters are now married with children and navigating mid-life crises.
Hirani said: “I’m still working on that script. There is a lot of work left. It’s primarily about what happens to these characters 15-20 years later. It’s not about college or anything. They are married and have children now. They are experiencing a mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?”
Asked whether the sequel would also deliver a message, he replied: “Of course! A big one.”
In April, actor Aamir Khan confirmed that a sequel to 3 Idiots was in development. Speaking to Amar Ujala, he said he had heard the story and described it as “wonderful.”
“The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good—unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” Aamir said.
The sequel is expected to reunite the original cast, including Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, although the project remains in the writing stage.
