Eminent artist, puppet maker and cultural organizer Mustafa Monwar is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a Dhaka hospital after his health condition deteriorated.
His wife Mary Monwar confirmed the matter to the media on Thursday, saying the 91-year-old artist has long been suffering from multiple health complications. He has been receiving treatment at the ICU of Square Hospital since June 14.
Mustafa Monwar was first admitted to the hospital on May 20 after falling ill. After 15 days of treatment, he returned home on June 5 but did not make a full recovery. His condition worsened again within a few days, leading to his readmission to the hospital on June 14.
“After returning home, his oxygen saturation suddenly dropped and his blood pressure fell. Following doctors’ advice, he was rushed to the hospital and has remained in the ICU since then,” Mary Monwar said.
She sought prayers from the public for her husband's speedy recovery.
Born on September 1, 1935, in Jessore, Mustafa Monwar is regarded as one of the country's most distinguished artists and cultural figures. Over the course of his career, he held key positions at Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, National Institute of Mass Communication and Bangladesh Film Development Corporation, among other institutions.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts and culture of Bangladesh, he was awarded the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2004.
