Take a Netflix break: Binge-watch these short films

It has happened multiple times that I keep scrolling endlessly to find something to watch on Netflix with my dinner plate on the other hand before I make up my mind to rewatch Big Bang Theory for the 99th time.

While Netflix does bring in an array of films catering to the different tastes of its viewers, oftentimes the content feels repetitive.

So, here are five different short films on YouTube to save you the time and effort of aimless scrolling:

Kavi (2020)

A hard-hitting tale of a young boy in India who wants to play cricket and go to school, but instead he’s forced to make bricks as a modern-day slave, reiterating the state of education in the subcontinent. This film has been nominated for Oscars 2020 and also has 50+ awards to its name.

A school bag (2017)

Winner of awards at several film festivals, this film directed by Dhiraj Jindal, featuring Rasika Duggal, is about a mother fulfilling her little son’s wish. However, you will not be ready for the ending.

Alma (2009)

Directed by Rodrigo Blaas, this atmospheric animated short film tells the eerie story of a young girl who encounters a mysterious toy shop with a dark secret. It blends elements of horror and fantasy beautifully.

Chutney (2016)

When Vanita notices her husband getting cozy with another lady, she invites her home. As their conversation proceeds over a few fritters and chutney, things get dark and murky. It’s a dark comedy with a hard-hitting message

The Neighbor’s Window (2019)

Written and directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Marshall Curry tells the story of Maria who has grown frustrated with her husband (Greg Keller) and her daily routine. But her life is shaken up when two free-spirited twenty-somethings move in across the street and she discovers that she can see into their apartment until something changes her perception one day. This Oscar-nominated short film packs a powerful emotional film making it a perfect watch.
