Akshay Kumar, an Indian actor, comedian and all-around superstar, has broken the world record for the most selfies taken in three minutes – 184 in total.
James Smith (UK) held the previous record with 168 selfies. Previous record holders include Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, musician Donnie Wahlberg and former footballer Alan Shearer (UK), Guinness World Records reported on Thursday.
More than 240 admirers of Akshay Kumar gathered to take selfies with their idol at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai.
Akshay, 55, was ready to take as many pictures as possible as he stepped between the two lines his followers had created while wearing a vibrant orange jumpsuit.
One by one, fans of Akshay came from alternating sides, darting into the picture and then vanishing again.
Within three minutes, Akshay captured 209 pictures; however, some of them were rejected because of blurry faces.
All selfies must comply with the record's requirements and be sufficiently bright to recognize and count the subject as a distinct participant.
However, Akshay was easily able to smash the record despite the 25 selfies being disregarded. He was able to get 79 more shots than The Rock did.
It was undoubtedly a giddy crowd, said GWR Official Adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar.
Akshay later revealed to Swapnil that he would like to attempt to break some fitness records in the future.
While setting a push-up record is something he is really interested in, he is also game for something a little more extreme, like dangling from a helicopter, he said.
Calling the Guinness World Record a tribute to his fans, Akshay wrote on Instagram: “Everything I have achieved and where I am in life is due to the unconditional love of my fans. This is my special tribute to them, acknowledging how they have stood by me throughout my career. With the help of my fans, we have broken the Guinness World Record for Most Selfies in 3 minutes. Thank you everyone. This was very special and I'll remember this forever.”
In order to promote his next movie “Selfiee”, which opens in theatres on Friday, Akshay prompted to break this record.
“Selfiee”, a Hindi version of the Malayalam comedy-drama “Driving Licence” (2019), is directed by Raj Mehta.
Emraan Hashmi, Diana Penty and Nushratt Bharuccha also play major parts in the movie.
